CHOP HOUSE (LEITH) – SEPTEMBER 2020

Perfect meaty feast – 4/5

As our anniversary was due, my fiancée booked a table in one of the restaurants, which was on my list for a long, long time. It was a sunny but chilly Saturday, and we went to this restaurant at the bottom of Leith. We were excited to try the food. We got to the door, and we were greeted by a pleasant waitress who accompanied to our table. Once we sat down, they brought the menus, and we order first our drinks, glass of prosecco for my fiancée and a pint of Caesar Augustus IPA for me (one of my favourites IPAs by the way).

For starters, we both went for the “Tempura prawns with slaw, sweet & sour chilli jam” which were truly delicious. The mix between the crispiness from the tempura with the crunchiness from the slaw and the sweet & sour touch from the jam works well and gives you a different texture in the mouth.

The time now for the mains, my fiancée asked for a sirloin steak medium-rare with peppercorn sauce and myself a rib-eye steak medium-rare with chimichurri. To go with, we ordered two portions of “triple cooked chips” and one side of “Romain & blue cheese salad”. The sirloin was juicy, tender and cooked as asked. Rib-eye steak was juicy and packed with flavour although unfortunately, it was more in the medium side of cooked than I asked for. I said that to the waitress, and she offered to cook another steak immediately, which I rejected due it was not too much overcooked for my liking; also, they gave us a glass of bubbly each as an apology. Back to food, the chips were crunchy in the outside but moist and soft in the inside. The salad was good, the crunchiness and freshness of the lettuce with the sharp taste of the blue cheese it was a winner combo.

Dessert time. Yes! As we both were full, we decide to share one dessert. This time we chose “Baked cheesecake with salted caramel sauce”. It is, with no doubts, one of the best cheesecakes that I have ever had. It was soft and creamy, and the salted caramel sauce matches perfectly with the rest of the dish.

We enjoyed our Saturday’s lunch in Chop House in Leith; we will come back!
